Ronnie Slater, Founder of M&S Distributors
It is with great sadness that we have to announce the passing of one of our company’s founders Ronald Slater at the age of 86 after a relatively short illness.
 
Ron started his career in fasteners & fixings with Thomas Proctor on the Newcastle Quayside where his duties were initially in the warehouse before latterly assisting with the sales team. He eventually moved to GKN at Blaydon where he was employed on the sales desk before moving into external sales after passing his driving test in 1977.
 
In 1982 Ron started his own business, M&S Distributors Ltd alongside George Mordue who had also worked at GKN. Although he retired in 2001 Ron always kept an active interest in the affairs of the company. Only 3 weeks ago, despite being unwell, he was still spotting potential new customers in the local newspaper business section. In recent times he also loved to reminisce about his work colleagues, suppliers and customers alike.
 
He will be a big miss but his legacy continues in a business that now employs more than 30 people over two sites.
 
A funeral service for Ron will be held on Thursday 24th September, 12.45PM at Newcastle West Road Crematorium (East Chapel) then at the Strathmore Suite in the Gibside Hotel, Whickham. All welcome.
 
Family Flowers only. In lieu of flowers donations may be made via a collection box to the Community Nursing Team (District Nurses of the Inner West Locality).
